A sudden change of a dog's primary diet can be hard on both their stomachs and their eating habits. When new ingredients and substances enter the intestines the balance in numbers and combinations of the local bacteria colonies is disturbed. Changing dog food is one of the most common causes of diarrhea and gastro-intestinal upsets. It should be done gradually over a period of several days, so the intestinal flora of your dog can adapt to the new dog food.
How gradual is gradual? On the first day of change, you should have plenty of the old dog food left. Add three quarters of their old food, and one quarter of the new food. You should do this for at least two days. After two days or so, add in another quarter, so you have half old food, half new food. Again, keep it at this level for another two days or so. Then add in a third quarter (one quarter old, three quarters new), and finally you can phase out the old food completely.
What can happen if you don't do it gradually? Stomach cramps, heartburn, indigestion, diarrhea, vomiting, or refusal to eat.
Koko's Gourmet Dog Foods can be kept in a freezer for up to 1 year, but we recommend that frozen product be used within 3 months of purchase. Once the package is thawed it can be kept in the refrigerator for only 3 to 4 days, the same as food you would cook for yourself.
- Keep frozen until ready to use. Thaw in the refrigerator or in cold water. After thawing, keep refrigerated and use within 3 to 4 days.
- Serve the meal lukewarm or at room temperature - not too hot or too cold;
- Keep the bowl clean and don't let uneaten food particles accumulate. Avoid using a harsh or strong smelling cleanser;
- Give each pet its own bowl and keep the feeding routine regular and reliable;
- In most instances feed one or two meals a day, taking up and refrigerating or discarding any uneaten food after about thirty minutes;
- Provide a place to feed that is reasonably quiet and pleasant and protected from intrusions by young children, other animals, or strangers.
